Hope you enjoy Heley What is
American Tribal Style? American Tribal Style Belly
Dance (or ATS) has evolved form both Egyptian and Turkish Cabaret, and North
African Folkloric dances, and has stylistic influences from Spanish Flamenco
and the dances of India. It was founded in San
Francisco in 1987 by Carolena Nericcio,
director of Fat Chance Belly Dance troupe through the need
to carry on dancing after her teacher Masha
Archer who she had trained under for seven years retired. The dance is an
improvisational format rather than being structured by chorography. Dancers relay on non-verbal set ups and
gestures to cue moves and direction. Its overall effect is the unity of the group dancing and communicating
as a whole and not on the individual dancer.
This dance format
celebrates female form and unity whatever size or shape you are, and is about
the connection of women dancing together. It is liberating and sensual not sexual, and helps to build
confidence, balance and coordination, and gives the dancer a better
understanding of movement within the key muscle and joint groups.
The Costume ATS costume consists of
pantaloons or ruffle pants, a full cotton skirt (which can be up to 25 yards
wide), a hip shawl, and a choli (a short open backed top). For extra adornment for
performance, a coin bra, tassel belt or coin sash, and a headdress or hair
swept up and adorned with flowers is added. Opulent displays of jewellery, such as coin necklaces, bracelets and
cuffs, rings, and ornaments pinned anywhere that might catch the eye or
enhance movement are also encouraged.
There really is no
"right" or "wrong" way of putting this costume together,
as long as it gives a unity to the group, empowers the wearer by flattering
the line of the body and enhances the display of moves and gestures of the
dance.
